All About Implants

What Are Implants?

Dental implants have been used for over 1,000 years; archaeologists uncovered an ancient Mayan jawbone with three of them made from shells. Today, Dr. Seal uses titanium to create your dental implants. Titanium is highly biocompatible – it does not provoke allergic reactions or degrade from harmful bacteria. The titanium post is inserted into the jaw to act as a replacement for an actual tooth root. This post is screw-shaped and protrudes above the gum line.  A bridge, crown, or denture is then anchored to the protruding part of the post.

After implantation, the surrounding bone grows back, right up to the edge of the post. This process, known as osseointegration, firmly anchors the post and prevents it from moving. Full integration can take between four and six months to finish. Several factors can affect successful bone integration. Patients with poorly controlled diabetes have slower wound healing and slower osseointegration following the surgery. Smoking or using smokeless tobacco similarly slows healing and integration. Conversely, a relatively soft diet right after implantation and diligent dental hygiene habits help your implant successfully merge with your jaw.

Who Gets Implants?

Patients with missing teeth are possible candidates for implantation. Your lifestyle habits, jawbone density, and health conditions will affect your suitability for the procedure. The number and placement of teeth missing determine what kind of dental prosthesis will be attached to the implant. Unlike dentures, implants restore 100% of chewing ability, feel just like your real teeth, and do not need to be removed. They also prevent bone loss and put no stress on remaining healthy teeth. Many times, a prosthetic tooth or bridge can be attached to the post in a single session. If multiple sessions are necessary, you will be given a temporary appliance during the treatment phase.

Dr. Seal believes your dental restorative work should be comfortable, functional, and beautiful.
