Want a New Smile? You May Need a Prosthodontist-Cosmetic Dentist!

Cosmetic dentistry is not a specialty recognized by the American Dental Association, but you’ve probably heard or read about cosmetic dentists in the past few years. A “cosmetic dentist” performs procedures that improve the appearance of a smile.

Prosthodontists have been improving the appearance of their patients’ smiles for most of this century. As a prosthodontist, Dr. Seal earned his doctorate degree in general dentistry, then completed two years of advanced training in the discipline of prosthodontics. He studied fixed prosthodontics, including ceramics, color, crowns, bridges, and other elements of advanced dental treatment. He also underwent significant training in procedures considered “cosmetic,” such as porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns, and correcting esthetic imbalances in a smile.

Dr. Seal believes all dentistry should be cosmetic, as well as functional and durable. The dental ceramists who create prosthetics and restorations for Dr. Seal use dental ceramics that reflects light much like natural tooth enamel. He pays attention to details like the shape, texture, and color of each tooth he restores or replaces, yet he also considers the overall appearance of the face.

Sometimes, the jawline looks short due to a loss of teeth and bone degeneration. With his expertise in periodontics, Dr. Seal can address this issue by restoring or replacing back teeth to rebuild the bite’s height. This elongates the jawline to create a more youthful and attractive appearance. It’s important, however, that the upper and lower teeth fit together properly, or have proper occlusion. If back teeth are restored improperly, malocclusion can lead to bruxism (teeth grinding), TMJ dysfunction, and tooth damage.
