What is Prosthodontics?

A prosthodontist specializes in the esthetic restoration and replacement of teeth and has two or three years of specialty residency training after earning a degree in general dentistry. The word “prosthesis” means a replacement body part. Dental prosthodontics is the science of replacing or repairing teeth. Modern dental prostheses include crowns, bridges, partials, dentures, and dental implants. Beyond understanding how to design and replace teeth so that they ensure proper oral function, a prosthodontist must also understand many aspects of dentistry, from oral pathology to periodontology. Contemporary research shows a significant link between good oral health and overall health.  People with a full set of strong, properly functioning teeth statistically live longer, healthier lives.
